Traditional public key cryptography and symmetric key cryptography are at the heart of ubiquitously deployed security solutions for protecting data in transit and storage (such as TLS, IPSec, WPA2 & WPA3, Signal Protocol, BitLocker). To protect data in use, many powerful crypto algorithms, such as functional encryption, fully homomorphic encryption, multi-party computation, and zero-knowledge proof, have been proposed. While significant progress has been made in the research of these advanced crypto techniques, they still suffer from high processing cost and are mostly limited to applications in certain niche areas. On the other hand, trusted execution environments (TEEs) offer hardware-assisted security guarantees with CPU speed performance but suffer from a larger attack surface. In this talk, we will first present an overview of TEEs’ security features, threat models, attacks and countermeasures. We will then present our efforts on designing TEE-assisted crypto systems, and show how crypto and TEE may complement each other and be combined to realize practical security solutions. Finally, we will point out some potential future research directions. Robert Deng is AXA Chair Professor of Cybersecurity, Director of Secure Mobile Centre, and Deputy Dean for Faculty & Research, School of Computing and Information Systems, Singapore Management University (SMU). His research interests are in the areas of data security and privacy, mobile and IoT security, and applied cryptography. He received the Outstanding University Researcher Award from National University of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew Fellowship for Research Excellence from SMU, and Asia-Pacific Information Security Leadership Achievements Community Service Star from International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISC2). He is a Fellow of IEEE and Fellow of Academy of Engineering Singapore. Multimodal Private Signature: Balancing Privacy and Accountability in Digital Transactions Digital signature (DS) is a fundamental security primitive for achieving integrity and non-repudiation in digital transactions. To protect the privacy of the signer, various privacy-preserving DS schemes have been introduced in the literature. Nonetheless, absolute privacy is not ideal in practice as it could be abused for illegal activities. We introduce Multimodal Private Signature (MPS) – a privacy-preserving signature system that offers a novel accountability feature: it allows a designated opening authority to learn some partial information of the signer’s identity, and the disclosed information can be determined by the transaction data being signed. Moreover, the (partial) identity disclosure to the authority is known in advance by the signer, meaning that the signer gives his/her consent. MPS balances the privacy and accountability needs and can be used in various privacy-preserving applications. Guomin Yang is an Associate Professor at the School of Computing and Information Systems, Singapore Management University. He completed PhD in Computer Science from City University of Hong Kong in 2009. Before joining SMU in August 2022, he was an Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong, Australia. His research interests are applied cryptography and privacy enhancing technologies. In 2015, he received the Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award. He is on the editorial board of Theoretical Computer Science, Journal of Cryptologic Research, and Journal of Surveillance, Security and Safety. He is also a co-editor of the ISO/IEC 11770-7 (2021) standard, and a program co-chair of ACISP 2018 and ACISP 2022. Towards Security, Functionality and Efficiency of Cloud Data Access Control
